Retirement is when you no longer have to live somewhere for work and can instead move to be closer to friends or family, or for opportunities that interest you.

The fact of doesn’t have to make difficult decisions about what furniture to keep or where to put needed, but seldom used, household items, seasonal decorations and other valued belongings, makes the decision of downsizing much easier.

Downsizing Tips for Seniors

As you plan for a move to a smaller space, here are a few downsizing suggestions for seniors:

  • Once you know you want to move, start organizing. Even if you haven’t found a new home yet. This will keep you from having to do it all in a month or two.
  • Take an inventory of the items you absolutely have to have in your new home: bed, dresser, table, chairs, etc. Keep in mind that it’s a good idea to minimize items that can create a tripping hazard in your new home.
  • Bought your new home? Great. Now figure out how much space you have and decide what will fit and what will need to be stored.
  • Box up and label mementos, keepsakes and family heirlooms that you plan to store in a well-lit, secure self storage unit. Once all items are stored, you can access them at any time.
  • After everything has been sorted, have a sale or donate items you know you won’t be storing or moving.
